I wrote this back in 2013, not long after we first came to Pelican Shores Estate. It reflects our card group at that time. Today’s long time regulars will recognize the names of some who are no longer with us.
The group remains active and all at Pelican Shores are welcome to participate. Our game of choice is now SAMBA – it’s easy to learn, and we always have a fun afternoon.
Pelican Jokers
At Pelican Shores, on Thursdays at one,
We deal out the cards and have us some fun.
There’s afternoon tea and plenty to eat
And gossip to share, so all take a seat.
Canasta for some, Five Hundred as well,
We’re keen to begin that’s easy to tell.
We don’t play for cash or sheep stations here,
We all make mistakes so be of good cheer.
The cards have been dealt, it’s Stormy to call,
The Joker he’s got, we count on it all.
It’s only a joke, it’s not up his sleeve,
We’re just having fun, you have to believe!
Now Marilyn deals, we all get ten cards,
And Kitty gets three, that can’t be too hard?
It’s Barry who frowns, he’s checking his hand,
He’ll just have to pass, his cards are too bland.
I think I can get ‘Six Hearts’ says young ‘E’,
And I’ll bump you up says Kevin with glee.
But I’m going spades and try to get eight
That’s two-forty points, not bad for us, Mate!
Hans writes down the score and deals ’em again
The bidding begins, all fun and no pain.
Eight ‘No Trumps’ for me says Richard real cool
And Milton agrees, he’s nobody’s fool!
We know Elaine Mann is Canasta Queen
Takes care of the pack, is always real keen.
But Diane and Bruce and Miffy and Jo
Can join in that game and go with the flow!
I’ll put on the jug it’s time for a break
There’s coffee and tea and maybe some cake.
Then back to the cards, in sixes or fours,
When we deal the cards at Pelican Shores!
