Although she has gone

The sadness has filled all your heart, all your mind.
You try to contain it, to keep it confined.
You don’t cry in public: it’s not what men do!
You have to stand tall, and somehow, just get through.

Your life was for two, you were never apart.
You have to go on, but just where will you start?
Your friendship was strong, but you’re left on your own.
You feel so depressed and so damned all alone.

The pain that you feel grows and burns, deep inside.
The dreams are all gone. What you shared has now died.
There is no one else who can be like that friend.
She’s gone now forever; her life’s at an end.

It seems that forever you shared all your pain.
You shared all your joys and your sunshine and rain.
The note that she left said she could not go on.
So how will you live now you know she is gone?

And now as you try to make sense of it all
there’s one final image you’d rather forestall.
How can you forget how you found her that day?
Her look of pure anguish; your utter dismay!

A roughly made noose was constricting her breath.
Her brain starved of oxygen: cause of her death.
You cried as you fought to remove that vile rope.
You knew ‘twas no use, but still hoped against hope.

You cradled her head on your lap in the dirt.
Your curses to God could not lessen your hurt.
Your tears flowed like rain, and you sobbed in despair.
How can you go on when you know she’s not there?

Her friends gather round, for they’re your friends as well.
They all share your pain, and they all feel like hell.
The strength of their numbers will help you move on.
Your life will continue although she has gone.
