Grandfather Clocks – Part 4

Grandfather’s Clock Patience is an easy patience or solitaire card game using a deck of 52 playing cards. It has a strategic side, with the chances of winning being around 3 out of 4 games, especially if careful consideration is given to which cards would be released in instances where you have a choice of plays between identical cards.

Rules

Start by taking the following cards from the deck:

 2♥3♠4♦5♣6♥7♠8♦9♣10♥J♠Q♦K♣.

Arrange these cards like a clock face.

  Put the 2♥ where 5 o’clock would be.

  Put the 3♠ where 6 o’clock would be.

  Put the 5♣ where 7 would be, and so on.

These cards that make up the clock face are called the Foundations.

Shuffle the rest of the cards and deal then into eight piles of five cards each so that all cards in each pile can be identified.

These eight piles are called the Tableau.

Object of the game

Move cards from the piles of the Tableau to the Foundation until the top cards in the Foundation are the correct number for a clock face.

For example,

The 10♥ starts in the 1 o’clock position. Your aim is to eventually place the A♥, in that position. And the J♠, starts in the 2 o’clock position. Your aim is to eventually place 2♠ in that position, and so on.

Cards in the Foundation can only build up, but an Ace can be played on a King, followed by a two, etc.

Queens are assigned a value of twelve. Jacks are a value of eleven.

The Foundation can only be built up by the same suit.

The uppermost card in each of the eight piles of the Tableau can be moved to another pile without matching the suits. Only the top cards of each column are available for play. Only one card can be moved at a time and any space that occurs may be filled with any available card.

Cards in the Tableau piles can only be built down, but in any suit.

The game ends either with all cards are put into the foundations with the clock face showing the correct numbers, or when no cards in the tableau can be moved.
