Grandfather Clocks – Part 5

Grandfather Clocks and Car Racing

Unless you’re a NASCAR fan, you may not have heard of Martinsville in Virginia.

If you like Grandfather Clocks, it’s the place go for a freebie! All you have to do is win the race. That’s right, the winner of this race receives a Grand Father clock as a trophy. They have since NASCAR started racing there in 1949. It’s pretty easy, for some. Jimmie Johnson’s won it 9 times. Richard Petty’s done it 15 times!

The track is only 0.526 miles (847 metres), making it the shortest in the NASCAR Cup Series Circuit.

The clocks are donated by the builders, but you can buy one for just (US) $2,599.99 from Grand Home Furnishings. Winning teams have ordered many extra clocks over the years – they get 20% discount if they order on the day – and Joey Logano’s team ordered 40 clocks after his first win in Martinsville in 2018.

But, heck, what would you do with 15 Grand Father Clocks? Darrell Waltrip is in the NASCAR Hall of Fame and has won 11 clocks. He says he gave one to his mother, another to his lawyer and another to the man who runs the Waltrip dealership. Jimmie Johnson says he has ‘a few’ in his man cave.
